Today Elizabeth is sharing a new free recording of “Eveline,” a short story from James Joyce’s 1914 collection Dubliners. These stories focus on what Joyce saw as the sterility and paralysis of Irish urban life, which he himself only partially evaded by living in Europe. In “Eveline,” the title character longs to escape with her lover to Buenos Aires. (Elizabeth has also recorded the long final story in the collection, “The Dead,” as a solo for LibriVox, and read another story, “A Mother,” for the LibriVox group recording of Dubliners.)
