Elizabeth’s latest solo recording for LibriVox is Henry James’ classic ghost story The Turn of the Screw: download it for free here. The narrative comprises the written testimony of a young governess, charged with looking after two small children at an isolated country estate, who believes they are being haunted. As the story progresses, the governess’ increasingly frenetic narration provokes the question: is she insane, or are the ghosts real? This is Elizabeth’s second LibriVox recording of a novel by Henry James; her first was What Maisie Knew, a less creepy but equally disturbing novel about childhood innocence and experience.
The image is from The Innocents (1961), a film based on The Turn of the Screw, in which Deborah Kerr plays the governess.
