It’s Free Audio Friday, and Elizabeth has recorded a new version of Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s classic 1892 story “The Yellow Wallpaper.” You can listen and download it exclusively here. (You can also read the story for free online at Project Gutenberg.) Inspired by Gilman’s own struggles with post-natal depression, the story portrays an unnamed narrator’s descent into madness, inspired partly by the sinister yellow wallpaper in the room in which she is staying, but also by her physician husband’s oppressive “treatment.”
File length is 36:02. Enjoy the recording! If this makes you curious about Gilman’s work, you can also listen to Elizabeth read part of her novel Herland for LibriVox.
