Free Audio Friday: Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl

In honor of the upcoming holiday in remembrance of Martin Luther King Jr., this week Elizabeth is featuring her recording of a memoir by another iconic African-American: Harriet Jacobs. Her autobiography, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl (written under the pseudonym Linda Brent and published in 1861) is a gripping and harrowing narrative of her attempts to save herself and her children from slavery. You can download it for free here. Elizabeth’s recording has been downloaded over 65,000 times and has garnered several five-star reviews on the Internet Archive. One listener notes, “Harriet Jacobs was a great American. I for one would have liked to have met her. Thank you, Elizabeth, for your wonderful reading and for bringing this work to the attention of modern readers.” Another raves, “Hands down the best reading I’ve heard from Librivox.” And another writes, “All the way through I was on tenterhooks, hoping for a happy ending for Harriet and her children. And [Elizabeth’s] reading is so beautiful and emotional you’d have to have a heart of stone not to be affected by Harriet’s suffering.”
